I am a huge advocate of having a canine friend. Many studies show that dogs can increase happiness and reduce stress levels. Not to mention the services they can provide such as replacing hand functions and a person's vision (more on that later).
About a few weeks ago, my roommate found a gorgeous, American bulldog mix. Unfortunately, he has either been missing for quite a while or was abused. He's awfully skinny and had cigarette burns.
Living with Cheddar, as we affectionately named him for his love of cheddar cheese, has been quite the experience. To begin, he was a very LARGE addition to our small home which already housed two miniature poodles. And, I've never lived with a large dog before.
As some would assume, living with four females did not intimidate him in the least. In fact, he assumed his role as "man of the house" smoothly and with a vigorous determination to alert the entire neighborhood, particularly when everyone was at home - in the middle of the night. Let me assure you that Cheddar is not a chauvinist male at all. He believes in equal rights and definitely lets the ladies have their way with him. My roommate kennel trained her poodle, so every morning Zoe respectfully walks into her crate and patiently spends her day there. To emphasize that all should be equal, Cheddar decided it was only fair if he spent time in the kennel as well. In addition, he allows Zoe to take his toys from him as she pleases. But, of course, he is a gentleman and never uses his growing strength against her when he wants his toys back.
Surprisingly Cheddar has required very little training. Not only is he housebroken but he's an expert at breaking into houses. He's an extremely intelligent dog but like everyone, Cheddar too has his weaknesses - he's terribly afraid of thunder. At time he is left on the covered terrace till we get home. During yesterday's afternoon rainstorm, overcome with fear, he decided to take matters into his own hands and jumped through an open window into our dining room. My roommate came home to a wonderfully decorated floor - it appears that Cheddar loves to leave his paw prints with mud as well.
In addition, to his artistic talents, our new friend is also very passionate, especially for paper. Any type of paper - tissues, paper towels, candy wrappers, you name it. My roommate has found him peacefully playing with a box of tissue paper before and he's been known to stealthily take a paper towel here and there. But he's very respectful of shoes, household items, and furniture. This mature dog is not interested in chewing any of these items.
Cheddar has been a great addition to our home, his harmless shenanigans have kept us laughing and in good spirits these last few weeks. He's a very intelligent, loyal dog who deserves nothing but the most loving home. In just less than a month he's captivated our hearts and added so much value. Sadly, we must give him away to a shelter this Saturday as we don't have the space or the funds to maintain him.
He'd be a great addition to a loving home, and a wonderful companion to a child or even a veteran. He gets along great with other dogs, children and men.
